We hitched into Waynesboro, VA the last Saturday of May and first things first got dropped off at Ming's Garden, an all you can eat Chinese buffet. We realized then that the post office would be closed until Tuesday because of Memorial Day. We had a package to pick up so we needed to stick around. We were then faced with 2.5 days of free time to wander and explore the sites of Waynesboro- which there weren't many.
We spent two evenings at a church in town that operates a donation based hiker hostel in the basement. We were excited to get a hot shower and they even made Fair-Trade coffee in the morning.

And ate. And ate. And then ate some more. Gregg ate a whole fried chicken and a six pack of sour cream donuts like there was no tomorrow. We won't even tell you the calorie or fat content but he still had room for more!

The following Tuesday we entered the Shenandoah National Park with great anticipation of seeing wildlife. The preserved lands are home to black bear, deer, rattlesnakes and numerous species of birds.

Our first encounter with a bear happened at about 9:30pm one night when we were inside our tent stealth camping. We thought there was a group of rambunctious night hikers trying to set up camp next to our tent so Gregg got his headlamp on and got out of the tent to see what was going on. As soon as he shinned his light forward two green eyes were looking back at him. A moment later the bear scurried of and we fell back asleep.
We saw so many incredible butterflies showing off their artistic designs.

And multiple deer daily, this one was just standing next to the trail for quite awhile.
